Who we are
We're an independently run studio based in North London. Every kitchen, every piece of joinery, every fitted bedroom we make comes out of our own workshop — designed by our own team and built by our own craftsmen.
That matters more than it might sound. It means we're not brokering work to third parties or buying in flat-pack carcasses and dressing them up. When you commission Proficiency, you're working directly with the people who'll be in your home.
Our team includes designers with backgrounds in interior design and architecture, joiners who trained through traditional apprenticeships, and project managers who handle everything from the initial site measure to the final snagging visit.

Proficiency grew out of a background in interiors and architectural joinery — the kind of work where tolerances are tight, finishes are scrutinised, and "near enough" isn't a phrase anyone uses.
Over the years, that foundation has shaped everything about how we work. We still use hand-cutting techniques for the details that machine routing can't replicate. We still visit every site ourselves before a drawing goes near a workshop. And we still believe the best joinery is the kind you stop noticing after a while — because it simply feels right.

No two projects look the same. That's the point.
We don't have a signature style we push clients towards. Some of the kitchens we're most proud of are understated — clean-lined, painted, functional. Others are richer: figured walnut, aged brass fittings, hand-painted farrow colours. What they have in common is that they were designed for a specific person, in a specific house.
We source timber and materials carefully, with preference for British and European suppliers. If provenance or sustainability matters to you, we're happy to talk through our supply chain.

Everything is made to order in our North London workshop. We don't hold stock or run standard sizes — each commission is cut and finished for the exact dimensions of your space.
You're welcome to visit the workshop while your project is in production. It's a good way to see your choices in context — how a particular timber species looks under workshop lighting, or how a finish sits against the hardware you've chosen.
